For Grand Haven High School lacrosse players Hillary Land, Sarah Shaw, Mackenzie Yoas, Mackenzie Klingenberg and Carlee Klingenberg, the summer of 2011 has been one to remember.

The Grand Haven girls played on the Grand Rapids-based Oasis Lacrosse Club, coached by Aquinas College head coach Frank Rogers and Aquinas junior Kati Rogers. The team competed in three multi-state tournaments this summer, bringing home three first-place trophies.

Of the five members of the team from GHHS, three graduated last spring and will continue to play lacrosse for college teams: Yoas and Mackenzie Klingenberg are playing for Aquinas College and Shaw will play for Olivet College.

Land, entering her junior year, and  Klingenberg, a sophomore, are returning to Grand Haven’s varsity team next spring.

Oasis’ season started in June with a return trip to Milwaukee to defend its championship title at the Milwaukee Brewtown Lacrosse Festival.

Oasis lost its first game, but the girls learned from that loss. In the midfield, they started connecting their passes to set up their signature fast-break attack. Their defense came together, and they came out strong against next three teams to go 3-0 and take first place at the tournament.

Oasis also won the Great Lakes Invitational in Galesburg.

Oasis found its toughest competition at the Indian Prairie Showdown. The girls played in temperatures up to 99 degrees for three days against highly competitive teams from around the country.

After seven games, the finals came down to the No. 1-seeded team Brave Elite, from St. Louis, and Oasis. Coming from behind in the first half was the team’s first challenge. They charged back with strong ball movement and solid defense. Oasis and the Braves ran head to head through the second half, ending in a tie.

Oasis finally won the contest in triple overtime, 9-8.

“It always amazes me how well our teams and families come together in such a short season,” Rogers said. “We had a great summer. I don’t think this game will ever be topped by another Oasis team, but it gives next year’s team something to work for.”

, May 23, 2011 11:27 p.m.

EAST GRAND RAPIDS -- After playing powerhouse East Grand Rapids in the first round of the Division 2 state tournament Monday, Grand Haven girls lacrosse coach Kim Vincent said her Bucs achieved their goals.

“They were competitive,” said Vincent, whose team ended the season at 10-7. “We actually scored and that was our goal. They never gave up and that made them winners in my eyes.”

East Grand Rapids, ranked third in D2, led 16-1 at halftime en route to a dominant 24-4 victory against the Bucs.

“To compete against teams like East Grand Rapids where they start them very early, have really strong programs and have seven coaches on the sideline — we just struggle,” Vincent said. “Our girls have fun. They’re learning a lot, they’re athletic and we’re growing.
