Lacrosse Vocabulary
a short list of popular lax terms
Crease. Circle around goal. Goalkeepers house. No one is allowed into the circle or to touch the line except the goalie.
Goal line extended. Continuation of the goal line out to the end of the 12-meter fan.
8-meter arc. Area directly in front of the goal.
Hash marks. Located on the 8-meter these help refs position players when setting up free position shots after a penalty.
Floating hash marks. The hash marks located in the lower right and left of the 12-meter fan, and not touching the 8-meter arc.
12-meter fan. Half circle area directly in front of the goal starting at the goal line extended
Hot spots. There are 7 hot spots. Starting with #1 located at goalie left behind the goal line extended to #2 at goalie right behind the goal line extended. #3 is top right outside of the point of the 8 meter arc. #4 is top right between #3 and the top center. # 7 is top center. #5 is top left between top center and #6, which is on the left point of the 8 meter arc.
Ball side. Position yourself between the player you are marking and the ball.
Goal side. Position yourself between the player you are marking and the goal.
Feed. Ball pass to the shooter.
On-ball. Offensive player carrying the ball. Defensive player marking the offensive ball carrier.
Off-ball. Player without the ball. Defensive player marking players without the ball.
Restraining Lines. Mark offensive and defensive ends at the 30 yard line. Only 7 players allowed at a time behind offensive restraining line. At defensive end, 8 players are allowed including the goalie.
Shooting Space. When defenders, who are not closely marking another attack player, position themselves in between a shooter and the goal circle as an attacker enters the critical scoring area.
Dangerous Shot. When shooter directs a shot at a defensive player who has not had time to evacuate the shooting space. Or when a shooter recklessly directs a shot at the goalie's head.
